Two ways to update Pop!_OS

A Short tutorial on how to update Pop!_OS.

Have you just installed Pop!_OS and are wondering how you go about updating the operating system. There are a couple different ways. Let’s update Pop!_OS!

The first way (the normal way) is go down to the Dock  and click the Pop!_Shop icon it’s the orange icon with a rocket ship, if you have updates you should see a notification bubble with how many updates are available.

Another normal way is to go to the top of your screen you should see a dot to the right of the time. Click on that and you should see a menu with some notifications click on the one that says there are some updates ready to be installed. Sometimes you may see a notification banner at the top that says there are system updates available to be installed.

Once you open the Pop!_Shop you will want to click the Installed button at the top of the window. You may be prompted with a message saying getting updates, once that happens you can click the green update all button in the top right of th window. This will start to download and install all system and app updates, and can take some time to finish depending on how many updates.

The geeky way to update Pop!_OS is to do it via terminal, open terminal my clicking the terminal icon in the dock.

Now you will want to type the command sudo apt update (sudo runs the command with elevated privileges) press enter on your keyboard. Once the command starts it will begin to search for updates. When it finishes you will see a line that displays how many packages you have to install.

Now you can install the updates by using the command sudo apt upgrade. As long as you have updates to install you will be prompted to continue press Y on your keyboard and then enter to continue.

Once the updates have finished updating, give your system a reboot and you will be all up to date.
